Helping Jenna Overcome her Fear of Canyoning

Yesterday, while my coworker Justin was with the briefing of a G Adventures group, we had a lovely older lady come in named Jenna. She had booked the Lost Canyon tour, but she had no idea what exactly she bought. So, while she was in the office she asked for the pick up time and what to wear to the tour, she also asked me what the tour included. I showed her the video and even shared my personal experience in the Canyon, but this didn’t change the fact that she was super nervous about rappeling because she is afraid of heights. I personally calculated her to be in her 40s and she looked to be in completely good shape. While we were sharing information, she told me she had done skydiving before, so that really caught my attention. Aside from that, I explained to her how safe our equipment is and how professional our guides are. She ended up a bit less nervous but didn’t leave without asking me If I could go do the tour with her. I told her I had a schedule that I had to respect, but that I would really love to!

Thankfully, my bosses let me switch my shift in order to be with Jenna for this activity. When Jairo and David went to pick her up in the hotel lobby, she told David she was not going to the tour anymore. David told her that she would have to tell that to Kimberly and she immediately came to the van to check if I was really there. As soon as she saw me, Jenna hugged me tight and went to pick up her bag for the tour. I must say she is so brave because she overcame that fear and did perfectly fine the whole way through the tour. She couldn’t stop telling me how thankful she was that I was on the tour with her, and that melted my heart right away. It was a pleasure meeting her and being part of the mission she accomplished; it was a great personal experience for me! The guides and even the rest of the tour-goers were really giving her support at all times, which made her so special to the whole group. She was so happy with everything and everyone. I always knew she could do it; she did skydiving so I really wanted her to prove to herself that she could also do rappel.

At the end she told us she was 62 years old. I couldn’t believe that she was a 62-year-old lady looking so fit! I envy (in a positive way) everything she accomplished at that age. I want to look that good and still be doing all that at that age! It was amazing. I am so grateful that I could share that moment with her and, most importantly, for be there for her!
